A teenager denied possessing an air pistol and drugs, and was granted $50,000 bail by a Magistrate yesterday.

Josef Derrick Smith, 19, is alleged to have been found with a Marksman Repeater. 177 calibre pistol and cannabis on December 30.

No details of the offence were outlined in Magistrates' Court. However, Senior Crown counsel Paula Tyndale said afterwards that the items were allegedly found during a search of Smith's home in Horseshoe Road, Southampton.

Members of the media were out in force for the case, having heard that a firearms matter was before the court in the aftermath of the Christmas shooting spree that left one man dead and two more injured.

However, Smith's lawyer Charles Richardson said after the hearing that the case was not in connection with that. Ms Tyndale also said she was unaware of any link with the shooting investigation.

During the court appearance, she requested that strenuous bail conditions be set.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered Smith to report to Hamilton Police Station twice weekly and surrender his travel documents, in addition to $50,000 bail.

Smith's trial will take place on February 6.
