'I was just trying to get my team out of trouble'

Irving Romaine rounded into top form with the bat in the Netherlands yesterday, writes Colin Thompson.

With wickets tumbling all around him, the ever-smiling Romaine weathered the storm to break free of a lean spell with the bat.

The Bermuda skipper banged an unbeaten 103 off 127 balls and helped himself to a serving of 14 fours and two sixes to lead his team's resistance.

It was the Dellwood School teacher's highest contribution since last year's World Cricket League series in South Africa ¿ and first Intercontinental Cup ton in two-years.

Romaine arrived at the crease in the 22nd over with his team tottering at 56 for five.

"It was good to get some runs today, although overall I wished the team had scored more," he said. "I was just trying to get my team out of trouble. The strip was excellent for batting, and I basically batted in sessions.

"The main priority for me was to bat for time because in a four-day game you have to have the patience to wait for the bad ball to put it away.

"Overall, I thought it was a good innings but it was too bad that I ran out of partners. I think after scoring the hundred we should've batted for time.

"But we are here for a goal and have a lot of new guys in the team who are doing their best. And that's all one can really ask for."

Romaine is now the only Bermudian batsman to have scored multiple Intercontinental Cup centuries.
