Dockyard goes all out for Christmas season
A new initiative to get locals to shop in Dockyard was launched yesterday promising entertainment, vendors and special promotions.
Minister of Works and Engineering Dennis Lister announced the programme, called Rockin' with Lights, which is hosted by the West End Development Corporation and his Ministry.
Rockin' with Lights will take place every Sunday from November 25 until December 23 with shopping from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Clocktower Mall.
There will be local vendors, bands, school choirs, Gombeys, a kiddie corner and a Winter Wonderland on the upper level of the mall. Complimentary seasonal snacks and soft drinks will be available from Beethovens, Bonefish, Freeport and Frog & Onion restaurants.
Mr. Lister said the primary aims were to generate a diversity of shopping opportunities in the West End for the community, to develop an annual Christmas programme consisting of weekly live entertainment and family activities and to enhance the visual appeal of the Royal Naval Dockyard through special lighting displays.
The minister also said there will be Rockin' with Lights sales promotions offering customers the opportunity to obtain a VIP shopping card with the purchase of $50 or more at any store in the mall including restaurants.
The VIP card can be used every time one visits Dockyard and is valid until December 23. And all card members will be eligible for a grand prize draw on December 16.
A highlight of the programme will be the first Rockin' with Lights Street Festival on December 16 featuring a wire light sculpture competition with entries from middle and high school students. The schools have been sponsored by local companies to participate in the event with the aim to promote academic excellence in the arts. Gorham's is the key sponsor of the entire event.
Mr. Lister said: "The students will be offered a unique opportunity to express their artistic ability in a fun and creative manner over the holiday season. The competition will provide our schools the chance to win several prizes and awards for their time and effort devoted toward this festive project."
