Worker caught with cannabis gets $1,600 fine

Justin Renaud leaves Magistrates' Court after being handed a hefty fine for drug possession.

A man whose stash of cannabis was discovered when armed Police raided his home has been fined $1,600.

Officers from the Narcotics, Serious Crime and Emergency Response teams conducted the early-morning search in Serpentine Road, Pembroke, on September 21, 2006.

They found cannabis and cannabis resin, and arrested Justin Renaud, now 24, and Jeremiah Hayward, now 25.

At Magistrates' Court on Friday, Renaud pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and cannabis resin and drug equipment in the form of a pair of scissors.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court he admitted to owning a total of 20.02 grams of the drug that the Police found in the kitchen and in the pocket of his jeans.

Ms Clarke said the defendant, who is employed at Bermuda Construction Services, has no previous convictions.

His lawyer Mark Pettingill described him as a hard worker. "I dare say he's learned his lesson about the company he keeps," he added.

Meting out the fine, Acting Magistrate Nicole Stoneham told Renaud: "No doubt you realise that the possession and use of drugs is a very grave offence in Bermuda. You are, no doubt, aware that the use of drugs by yourself can only lead to a very, very dark road and it doesn't take much for anyone to realise that it is not always easy to get off the road."

She urged him to seek assistance in dealing with his use of drugs.

Renaud told her: "I've changed my ways. I work every day... I'm sorry for what I've done, for wasting the court's time. You'll never see me again your honour."

Hayward pleaded guilty in January to possessing 74.26 grams of cannabis and resin valued at more than $5,000 with intent to supply. He was jailed for 18 months.
