Key portfolio left to 'deteriorate' under PLP's stewardship

The Ministry of Works and Engineering has not been managed properly under the PLP, according to the UBP manifesto.

It stated: "Unfortunately, the PLP Government has allowed the performance of this key Ministry to deteriorate. Several years ago, it was at the centre of a protracted investigation regarding mismanagement at the Berkeley site.

"Recently, the extensive and dangerous mould conditions found at CedarBridge Academy and both the Hamilton and Southside police facilities call into question the ability of the PLP Government to adequately maintain our public buildings.

"The next United Bermuda Party Government will work to restore the credibility of this important Ministry by improving accountability, transparency and efficiency."

The UBP pledged to:

• Re-establish open tendering for all Government contracts.

• Ensure the department follows a clear and defined set of priorities including better management of resources, better quality control and regularly published audits on major construction projects.

• Outsource more public works projects to the private sector and in particular small businesses.

l Allocate to each constituency an audited budget to assist in the improvement of infrastructure, such as paving of estate roads, installation of speed bumps, street lighting and related projects.
