Lacrosse players win first ever tournament
The Bermuda Lacrosse Association are hunting for players of all ages to play in on-island and off-island tournaments ¿ just weeks after tasting their first ever victory in an international competition.
Still a fledging organisation, the BLA returned home from the RILAX Ocean
State Classic lacrosse tournament with a record of one win, two losses and one tie.
Their historical debut triumph against host's Rhode Runners adds momentum to the lacrosse movement on the Island with the next step preparing a team of Bermudian students for next summer's under-19 world championships in Canada.
Michael Totman, from the BLA, said the tournament started with a tough battle against Mt. Ida College which saw the Island comeback from a three goal deficit to draw.
"Due to time restrictions designed to keep the tournament on schedule there was no sudden death overtime to be played," he said. "The final game of the first day saw Bermuda lose to a tough Tailgators team.
"Our next opponents were our toughest competition yet facing the tournaments ultimate champions Rebel Lax ¿ a team from the lacrosse hotbed area of Baltimore, in Maryland.
"After a first half deficit of 5-0 Bermuda was able to claw back and win the second half but in the end lost the game by a respectable score of 8-5.
"We were able to carry the momentum from that second half into the final game against the tournaments host team Rhode Runners winning 11-2."
The BLA is now looking for players of all ages and skill levels to participate in on-island games and off-island tournaments.
