New Governor arrives

Bermuda's newly appointed Governor, Sir Richard Gozney (centre) and Lady Gozney (left) were greeted by Premier Dr. Ewart Brown and deputy governor Mark Capes and other dignitaries at the L. F. Wade International Airport last night.

A smooth tailwind carried Bermuda's newest Governor Sir Richard Gozney to the Island on time last night.

The British Airways flight arrived at 6.15 p.m. and Louis Vuitton hand luggage was carried out before the Island's newest Governor and his wife Lady Diana Gozney descended from the plane.

Already they seemed to fit in with the Island's colour pallet. Sir Richard wore khaki pants, a navy blazer, pinstriped shirt and pink tie while his wife wore a pink suit.

The 56-year-old was met by Deputy Governor Mark Gates, Premier Ewart Brown, Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley, Chief Justice Richard Ground, Police Commissioner George Jackson and Regiment officials.

Sir Richard was greeted warmly by the Premier who introduced him to many of the other dignitaries and the two men chatted briefly and exchanged pleasantries.

The Premier famously threatened to suspend ties with Sir Richard's predecessor Sir John Vereker.

In a sensational TV broadcast, Dr. Brown accused Sir John Vereker of failing to protect a top-secret Police dossier on allegations of corruption at the Bermuda Housing Corporation, which was leaked to the Mid-Ocean News in May.

Though he is arriving within days of a General Election a Government spokeswoman said Sir Richard's arrival had been scheduled for early December prior to the announcement of the election.

His previous post was as British High Commissioner to Nigeria and Her Majesty's Non-Resident Ambassador to the Republic of Benin and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.

Sir Richard is a career diplomat and has worked in Argentina, Indonesia and Swaziland. He has also worked in the Foreign Commonwealth Office as Head of Section for NATO nuclear arms control, Principal Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary and Head of Security Policy Department.

He was awarded the Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 2006.

Sir Richard graduated from St Edmund Hall at the University of Oxford in 1973 with a Bachelors in Geology.

He will be officially sworn in today by the Chief Justice at the Cabinet Building at 11.30 a.m.
