Terry out for a month

LONDON (AP) Chelsea captain John Terry will miss up to a month of the new Premier League season because of a knee injury.

The England central defender missed Chelsea's Community Shield defeat to Manchester United on Sunday after damaging medial knee ligaments in training.

Last season, Terry was out for two months due to a back injury. With Terry in the team, Chelsea conceded an average of one goal every two league games. Without Terry, they conceded an average of one goal per game.

Terry is likely to miss England's friendly against Germany on August 22. He is also doubtful for the European Championship qualifiers against Israel on Sept. 8 and versus Russia four days later.

Defenders Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate are also expected to miss those matches due to injuries, leaving Rio Ferdinand as England's only fit specialist central defender.

England manager Steve McClaren may contact Liverpool center back Jamie Carragher, who announced his intention to retire from international soccer last month, to clarify his status.

Carragher is disappointed that in most of his 34 matches for England he has only appeared as a substitute, or been played out of position at right back.

• Everton have agreed a fee with Wigan to sign left back Leighton Baines.

The England under-21 international will have medical tests and discussed personal terms with the Toffees yesterday.

Baines turned down a transfer to Sunderland last week after the clubs had agreed a fee.

Wigan then rejected a bid from Everton of $8.1 million plus a player that Everton rated at $4.1 million, reported to be Andy van der Meyde.

The details of the latest bid have not been released, but Wigan said last week it would not accept less than the $12.2 million Sunderland offered.

Despite media reports suggesting that Baines is an Everton fan, he is quoted as saying he supported the Toffees' rival Liverpool as a boy. He also attended Liverpool's soccer youth academy.

Baines joined Wigan in 2001 after being released by Liverpool, and was part of the Latics team that won promotion through two divisions. He won Wigan's player of the year award last season and played 154 games for the club.

• Newcastle signed Spain under-21 international Jose Enrique from Villarreal for $12.7 million.

The left back agreed a five-year deal yesterday with the Premier League club.

Other preseason signings by Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce have included Mark Viduka, Joey Barton, David Rozehnal, Geremi, Alan Smith and Claudio Cacapa.

• Birmingham manager Steve Bruce pulled out of a deal to sign Hossam Ghaly because of the Egypt midfielder's attitude.

Birmingham had said that Ghaly's $6.1 million transfer from Tottenham was off due to "footballing reasons."

I "found (Ghaly's) attitude and his arrogance insulting to the rest of the people who I employ, and, more importantly, the players," Bruce said on Sunday. "He was criticising everything, including his team-mates.

"I think he's a good player but you need somebody who comes through the door who is going to enhance the dressing room, not disrupt it. I didn't want him anywhere near my team."
