More than 400 students attend Careers Fair

Job advice: Assistant Accountant General Luia Peniston talks with MSA student Joshua Dawson.

There was so much to see and do at the annual Career Fair at the Bermuda College, which saw more than 400 students attend the opening day.

With more than 60 booths, students from Bermuda's middle and senior schools had an array of fields to check out from international business to health to undertaking.

Thirteen-year-old Samantha Croke from Dellwood Middle School said she wanted to be a beautician and was looking forward to checking out the interesting booths. Her friend Zakkiya Muhammad was looking at the Bermuda Hospitals Board booths because she wants to be a paediatrician.

"A lot of people in my family are involved in health," she said. "When I was growing up I thought everyone was a doctor.

"I think it is great that they have a fair because lots of my friends don't know what they want to do when they grow up. When they come here they can get some ideas."

And 14-year-old Kariim O'Connor, of CedarBridge Academy, who wants to be a basket ball player or actor, said he was having fun.

"There is lots to see and I think it's a good idea to show us what is out there," he said.

Meanwhile Ralph Richardson of the Ace Foundation, primary sponsors of the event, said: "We have been doing this for three years and I think we really got it right this time. Four hundred students attended our opening evening on Wednesday.

"Many have said they did not know what they wanted to be when they walked into the fair, but now they have an idea of the career they want to get into.

"It takes a lot of people to make an event like this happen and I want to thank everyone who donated and participated in the event."–Education Minister Randy Horton said he was enjoying the fair and thought it was well planned out and detailed. Among the booths were many international businesses and construction firms, two of the fastest growing industries on the Island.

Yesterday was the last day of the three-day event.
