Thieves strike buses at East End depot

Fare boxes were stolen from nine buses after thieves struck just before midnight at the St. George's bus depot.

The Department of Public Transportation (DPT) launched an investigation yesterday after the incident.

DPT Director Dan Simmons said the thieves stole nine fare boxes or vaults, some of which were empty.

He also said the nine buses were undergoing repairs yesterday to replace the vaults.

By 11 a.m., four buses were already back on the road while the remaining five were expected to be in operation by 4 p.m.

Mr. Simmons thanked his staff who he said did an "excellent job" in making sure bus service from the east was not disrupted.

Police are currently investigating the matter and anyone with information and witnesses are being asked to contact Southside Police Station or the DPT at 292-3851
