Red Cross appeal raises $11,000 for Bangladesh

A Bermuda Red Cross appeal for the 1.2 million victims of the Bangladesh cyclone has brought in $11,000 in donations.

The funds will provide relief to people made homeless in the disaster, in the form of food, clothes, clean water, sanitation, healthcare and shelter materials. The cyclone destroyed more than half a million homes, and families now face the onset of winter weather.

The latest death toll from Cyclone Sidr is 2,997, with 34,508 injured and 1,700 people missing. The disaster affected six million people in 30 districts in southwest Bangladesh.

The storm contaminated many drinking water sources, killed thousands of livestock and destroyed 1.7 million acres of crops.

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies — the lead agency for shelter support with the United Nations shelter cluster — aims to raise a total $22.2 million for long-term support for those affected.

The Bermuda Red Cross has so far raised $10,920 and collections are ongoing. To make a donation, telephone 236 8253 with your debit/credit card details. Or donate to the Bank of Bermuda account: 010-187417-013 or Bank of N.T. Butterfield: 20-006-060-365472-200.
