Defending champs PHC hope to get off to a good Martonmere start

@$:BODY-FRANK:PHC Zebras and North Village Rams will be looking to get their Martonmere Cup quests off on the right foot when they take on Boulevard Blazers and Devonshire Colts respectively on Saturday night at BAA Field. BODY-FRANK-2:Zebras, who defeated Devonshire Cougars in a penalty shoot-out to lift last year's trophy, will be anxiously waiting to return to the same venue where they put North Village to the sword in the Charity Cup, 7-1.Coach Kyle Lightbourne remains cautious, however, knowing that a victory for his side will guarantee them a spot in the next round at the expense of Boulevard."We are the defending champions and want to defend it as well as we can," said Lightbourne. "So we will take the game very serious and try to get off to a good start which will help us get a result."We have been concentrating on our fitness and getting it to where it should be to compete at a high level."It is not ideal for us in that we played one week then had a week off, but we will get back to business when the whistle blows. "I managed to watch a bit of their game against Cougars, so we are putting a few things in place to come up against them."Boulevard's defeat to Cougars leaves them staring at an early exit out of the Martonmere Cup, and Lightbourne knows all too well that a team which is desperate and looking to make a statement is a very dangerous side to play against. And with his men chomping at the bit with a host of players in mid-season form so early, the Zebras coach will have his side primed and ready for the battle that lies ahead on Saturday evening."We are going in to play a side which lost their first game 1-0 to Cougars and are looking for a result in the next match."We know that in this situation Boulevard can't afford to lose and if they want to go further in this competition, they will have to take the game to us."I saw some of their strengths and also some weaknesses. I'm sure their coaching staff will be brushing up on a few things for the game. "I'm just looking forward to the game, it will give our guys some reward for their hard work."After their heavy defeat in the Charity Cup a fortnight ago, North Village skipper Ralph Bean Jr. reckons his side have erased the mistakes that contributed to their Charity Cup meltdown against PHC Zebras two weeks ago as they prepare for their first match in the Martonmere Cup on Saturday against Devonshire Colts.Village were given a harsh lesson in what goes around comes around as the men from Warwick redeemed their 7-3 loss in the Friendship Final last season, issuing seven of their own in a 7-1 thrashing of the Rams.Bean believes the break in between games has been a blessing, giving his team time to work out the kinks that were obvious in their defeat; one of which is their fitness."The team we fielded in the Charity is a different team from what we had last year," said Bean. "But we are OK and will look to bounce back from that match. BODY-TIMES-2:"We are still building with what we have and gelling the new guys in. "We obviously want to improve on our last game, and that is what we have been doing since the Charity, so we will gauge how far we are along after the game."Any improvements right now are a bonus for us. The season hasn't started yet so results right now are not important."I mean everyone wants to win, but we want the win our games in the league. Our fitness was our main weakness and it was quite evident during the match. They were prepared and we weren't, simple as that."North Village will run up against a Colts side that have already played a match in their group, losing to Dandy Town 2-0 on Saturday, and could be the ones who catch the brunt of Village's rage as they look to stay in the tournament with a victory.Nothing less than a win for Colts will help them in their bid to advance to the next round."Both teams will be out for redemption this weekend so it should be a good contest," he said."I would like to say at the end of the match that the difference between our last game and this one is fitness, but we can't say that until the match is done and we can be honest with ourselves."PHC play Boulevard at 7 pm, while North Village and Devonshire Colts will lock horns at 9 pm. Both matches to be played at the BAA Field.
