Small but mighty: Private Roger Phillipe of 10 Platoon aims down the sights of his 5.56mm Mini Ruger 14 rifle during a weapons lesson at Recruit Camp yesterday. Don't let the name 'mini' fool you, these rifles have an effective range of 300 metres and a muzzle velocity of 1,006 metres per second. The new recruit says he doesn't mind the training - except for the cold showers and early mornings.
