Breaking News: Police deal with unexploded bomb
The Marine Police are dealing with an unexploded bomb around two nautical miles off the West End this morning.
Chief Inspector Martin Weekes said the military device was spotted by a scuba diver, and is believed to date from the 1940s or 1950s.
His team plan to use explosives to blow it up, and there is no danger to marine traffic despite it being close to the cruise ship channel.
He explained: “It’s been there for a very long time but was recently discovered as they often are when the sea pulls the sand off something and people scuba diving spot something.
“This one’s close to the cruise ship channel, off an area known as the Crescent around 15 minutes or two nautical miles off the West End. It’s military ordinance left over from an exercise, probably there since the 40s or 50s.”
