Thompson rebounds to claim Ferry Reach win
Garth Thompson exacted his revenge over rival Neil de Ste Croix as the pair tangled again in the second race of the Conrad?s Mountain Bike Series at Ferry Point Park on Sunday morning.
Forced to retire with technical problems in the series? opener at Hog Bay Park a week earlier when de Ste Croix went to claim victory, Thompson established his authority over the long, fast course at Ferry Reach to win comfortably.
Setting a fast pace from the start, Thomson finished six laps of the 1.8 mile course in a time of one hour, two minutes and 54 seconds.
An interesting battle developed for third place with Grant Goudge holding off hard-charging Dave Padega, Geoff Wing and Mark Hatherley.
Improving Paul Hawco moved up to seventh place with Andrew Davis, Rolf Runkel and Boyd Kelly rounding out the open field.
The Male Intermediate category saw plenty of change from the previous week among the top positions with David McComas riding to his first victory.
Ever improving junior Matthew Godfrey finished second in a hotly contested battle with the previous week?s winner Fred Swan.
As expected Manny Packwood and Charles Dunstan enjoyed improved rides, managing to stay with the leaders well into the race. Ian Fox steadily rode his way to sixth place while Edwin Jordan and Nigel Godfrey closed out the field.
Paul Jack won his second consecutive novices race and may now be considering promotion to the intermediate field.
Dexter Swan was again solid in second place followed by Jeff Amaral, John McLaughlin, and newcomer Philando Hill jr, all of whom will look to challenge when racing resumes this weekend at Fort Scaur.
Tim Fox returned to action with a strong win in the 15-16 boys? division, leaving Geoffrey Burns to again settle for second place. Brian Rose and Curt Selley finished third and fourth.
Nathan Amaral won his second straight race in the 11-12 boys? division followed by Neil Dante Wilson, Mark Godfrey, Keishun Smith and Lorenzo Sequeros, all of whom performed well on a demanding course.
Alex Godfrey (13-14 boys) and Justin Ferreira (10 and under boys) again rode well although unopposed in their respective divisions while mother and daughter racers Sarah and Elizabeth Jordan also enjoyed uncontested wins.
The last races before Christmas are at Fort Scaur Park this Sunday, beginning at 8.30 a.m.
