Premier?s top four eye new BFA trophy

Dandy Town, PHC Zebras, Devonshire Cougars and Boulevard have all qualified for next week?s inaugural Premier Division Champions Cup, unveiled by Bermuda Football Association (BFA) last week.

The new tournament replaces the Dudley Eve Trophy which over the past two years saw touring teams compete against local clubs and select sides over the festive period.

While both Town and Cougars had already secured berths in the new competition prior to the weekend?s final round of first-half league fixtures, PHC and Boulevard clinched spots at the eleventh hour.

Needing to take maximum points from Somerset Eagles, Zebras ran out 3-0 victors to climb into second spot behind leaders Town while a ten-man Blazers team stole a valuable point off the Hornets to pip North Village by a goal difference of only one.

Runaway league leaders Ireland Rangers remain the sole First Division outfit to qualify for the First Division Champions Cup with the remaining three spots still up for grabs between Prospect, Devonshire Colts, St.George?s and St.David?s.

Paget are due to take on St.David?s in a make-up fixture tonight in the opening contest of a double-header at Devonshire Recreation Club that also includes a First Division contest between Wolves and Devonshire Colts.

Paget and Wolves will then clash on Thursday night at Somerset Cricket Club while Prospect meet St.George?s Colts in the opening match at 7 p.m.

The new Champions Cup tournament will feature six double-headers to be held over the holdiays in a double elimination format culminating in a January 2 final.

There is a $12,000 cash incentive at stake with the eventual winners of the Champions Cup set to pocket $3,000.

The first rounds of the tournament are scheduled for Tuesday, December 21 and Thursday, December 23 with the next round to take place on Boxing Day and Tuesday, December 28.

The penultimate round will be held on Thursday, December 30 with the final to be played on Sunday, January 2 at White Hill Field.

Devonshire Recreation Club, Somerset Cricket Club, St. David?s and Southampton Oval are also set to host the inaugural competition.

The draw for the Champions Cup will take place this Thursday.
