Safety concerns force referee to call off clash
Devonshire Colts and PHC were all dressed up with nowhere to go last night after their FA Cup clash at BAA Field was postponed for safety reasons, writes Matt Westcott.
Referee Steve Wakeland made the decision to call off the clash just minutes before the kick-off when a goalpost was found to be in an unsafe condition.
"The goalpost at the far end had come apart and needed to be welded," said Charles Clarke, chairman of the Bermuda Football Association's competitions committee. "Rather than take any chances, because if the goalkeeper had jumped and pulled on it it would have more than likely come down, the referee decided to call the game off."
BAA President Jon Beard said he had been aware of a problem at the weekend and steps had been taken to rectify the situation only for the club to be let down by a welder.
"When I went around the field before the FA Cup game on Sunday (BAA and Prison Officers) I saw that the back stansion for the goal had broken away from the weld," he said. "Number one - that was a danger to the players and, number two - if the ball had struck it it would not have been a goal."
With that in mind Beard replaced the broken goal with a training goal and the match went ahead.
"We then called for a welder. He was supposed to come yesterday (Monday) and he didn't come and as far as I knew he was coming today (yesterday)," said Beard. "But when I went down the club this evening the club manager told me the welder hadn't come today. We were stuck with the fact the goal had not been welded and so we went back to put up the goal that we had used for the FA Cup game.
"If the referee has decided that the goal is not safe that's their decision. I respect that and I can only apologise for the inconvenience. But there was nothing else we could do - if the person didn't come to fix the goal they didn't come to the fix the goal."
Clarke said a decision had not been made with regards to rescheduling the match though he was tentatively considering this Friday. A date was was due to be decided upon by the BFA today.
