Pocket Change proves of great value to Nick
Question: What does Robin Hood, North Village Reds and Nick DeCosta's two-year-old stallion Pocket Change all have in common?
Answer: three of the Island's hottest current unbeaten streaks.
But while both Hood and Village ply their trades on the soccer pitch, it is at Vesey Street these days where DeCosta's new rookie sensation is reaping immense dividends - and doing it with plenty of pocket change to spare!
Since making his debut at the beginning of the season, DeCosta's latest pride and joy has reeled off ten wins - to coin the phrase - on the trot, and has now advanced up to the 1.16-1.19 time bar.
"I think that the pony is very talented and it shows," said DeCosta.
"He's just come out of his time bar (1.19 and slower) so now I don't think that the winning will hold because now we will be competing against faster ponies."
Pocket Change will now be competing among the likes of Fancy That, driven by David Burrows Sr. and Grand Fire who was driven last weekend by Aaron Sims.
DeCosta's pony - purchased in Indiana over the summer - is the son of former top US harness racer Maja Mike, still bearer of one of the fastest times ever recorded in the sport.
"He's had a great start to the season and a great start to his career," added DeCosta.
"And I think that he will turn out to be a great pony."
But not only has Pocket Change taken everyone around the track by surprise with his recent string of dominating performances, but he has already far exceeded owner DeCosta's expectations for the season.
"Things started out a little rocky as it always does with these young ponies and you kind of get into it at risk because when you buy one you just never know whether it has ever raced before," explained DeCosta.
"You just never know what they are going to do and of course you are taking a big chance, but he's turned out to be a good pony and continues to show great potential."
DeCosta has not been the only one to drive Pocket Change to glory as last week Dal Vasconsalas enjoyed the honour.
"It's obviously been a delight and I haven't been the only one to drive him to victory as he's had a couple of different drivers and has still been able to keep the streak going," DeCosta said.
"So the pony is definitely proving that it's his talent and not the driver."
Looking ahead, DeCosta now has his sights on the "bigger prize" and that's the two-year-old stakes race series (three-races) and the annual stakes race which takes place during the Boxing Day holiday.
"This is what we are working towards right now," added DeCosta.
Just how Pocket Change fares in the new time bar remains to be seen when harness action resumes tomorrow night at Vesey Street (7 p.m.) and again on Monday's November 11 holiday. Post time is at 12 noon.
