West Enders looking to add to Village woes

Through the years North Village and Somerset Trojans have produced a series of exciting rivalries. And tomorrow should be no exception when winless Village host the Trojans at Bernard Park as Premier Division action resumes following last weekend?s FA Cup matches.

While the West Enders continue to live off their illustrious past, Village have been busy adding to their own proud winning tradition, savouring league and various cup glories over the last four seasons.

But there are those who would argue the house that former Village coach and former Trojan Kenny Thompson built is gradually eroding away while the sleeping giant in the West End is fast awakening.

Now in his second year at the helm of the club he helped make a dominant force in the 1980s and early ?90s, Trojans coach Dennis Brown appears to have restored self-belief in a team evenly blended with youth and experience.

And while Trojans will travel to the city with only one victory under their belts, the same cannot be said for a Village team that have seemingly parted company with the blueprint for success.

The Reds captured back-to-back Premier Division titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03 but had to settle for a disappointing fifth last season. Now after 270 minutes of league action in this campaign, Village remain rooted at the bottom of the pile, winless and with only one goal to their credit.

Although Trojans might enter Bernard Park confident of snatching maximum points, it would be unwise for the visitors to underestimate their opponents who proved they can be dangerous when cornered ? as Boulevard discovered in a Martonmere Cup semi-final clash earlier this month.

?Although Village have yet to win any league matches and are presently on the bottom of the table, they still have a talented team. Therefore we can?t afford to underestimate them as we only have three points and there is still a long way to go,? Brown warned.

Though Village have won two of their previous three encounters against Trojans, the last a 3-2 FA Cup semi-final triumph in 2002-03, Brown said that didn?t count for anything as he wasn?t involved with the club at the time.

?That?s all irrelevant now,? he added. ?But we still have a long way to go and really can?t afford to rely upon what happened two weeks ago.?

Brown, who won numerous cup titles at ?Silver City? during an outstanding career, was alluding to Trojans? 2-0 triumph over Southampton Rangers in the club?s home opener on October 17.

?Yes it was good to finally get our first victory back in the Premier Division,? he said. ?But we certainly can?t rest upon what happened two weeks? ago. We just have to take things one game at a time and continue improving with each match.?

Village, meanwhile, have been hit by the injury bug as promising forward Keishen Bean, veteran striker Damon Wade and ?keeper Zane Hendrickson are all out while midfielder Jamaul Boyles and Keith Jennings are said to be currently walking among the wounded.

Big striker Mackie Crane will miss tomorrow?s clash after receiving a red card during the Reds? 2-1 loss to Blazers last weekend.

Elsewhere tomorrow, defending league champions Dandy Town travel to White Hill Field to take on unpredictable Somerset Eagles, league leaders Boulevard are away to PHC Zebras at Southampton Oval while Devonshire Cougars should break out of a recent slump with a win over Southampton Rangers at the Den.

In weekend First Division action, the race for promotion continues to heat up with high-flying Ireland Rangers set to be put to the sword against a rejuvenated Devonshire Colts at Malabar while another team enjoying early season success, Paget, should extend their own run of good form against St.David?s at Lords.

In what will be the third meeting between these two clubs in seven days, X Roads Warriors host Hamilton Parish at Garrison Field, St.George?s host Wolves at Wellington Oval while Prospect and Social Club will do battle at Police Field.
