Bray gunning for Grand Slam
The final ranking tournament of the summer kicks off on Saturday ? with Andy Bray hoping to scoop the elusive Grand Slam.
Island number one Bray has already picked up Heineken, Island Construction and Argus wins this summer and is hoping to become the first player in years to sweep the board a the Fairmont Southampton Grand Prix.
But Bray, a winner at the Whaler Inn Courts last year, admits he is a little out of shape and will have to dig deep to claim the top prize ? three nights at the acclaimed hotel ? and once again keep his girlfriend Suzie, a former British junior national champion, happy.
?It would be fair to say I have let myself go a little,? said Bray, who has dominated the domestic scene this summer with his power game.
?The focus for me was always going to be the Island Games and I worked hard towards that. That was a big motivational factor and once that was gone it was just about topping up my fitness for the other tournaments.
?I haven?t been playing a lot of tennis recently and am not in the shape I was before. But I?m sure other players are in the same position and I will be ready to give it my best.
?It would be a great achievement to get the Grand Slam and follow in the footsteps of some very good tennis players.?
The singles only event, split into A, B and C divisions for both men and women, begins this Saturday with the finals taking place seven days later.
The tournament, as always, will be played with no advantage in deuce games.
