Five goals and boss Boyles still isn?t happy
After watching his charges hit five past Boulevard to advance to the Martonmere Cup semi-finals, one might have figured Dandy Town coach Devarr Boyles to be a happy camper.
They were dead wrong.
Instead of basking in the afterglow of last Saturday?s dismantling of Blazers, coach Boyles had a go at his players ? particularly his defence which gave away a soft goal and conceded a penalty early in the match.
?The first goal and penalty we gave up both result from sloppy defending. The players, again, did not adhere to what they were supposed to do and what they have been practising in training,? Boyles vented.
?I thought when we had the ball we failed to do the right things. Our middle defenders kept passing the ball wide and then thought their job was completed. Therefore, if we needed to go back they were not available and this hinders our football.
?It?s important for our players to bring what they learn in practice to matches, particularly our defenders. And I think since returning from our tour of Los Angeles our players haven?t settled back down to football.?
This certainly became evident only seconds into last Saturday?s contest when Town fell behind to a Shaki Crockwell strike from close range.
Town, fortunately, dodged a bullet shortly after when Angelo Simmons? spot kick was brilliantly saved by Cymande Davis.
But thanks to some clinical marksmanship on behalf of the versatile Chris Anderson, Lashun Dill and new acquisition Michael Parsons, Hornets bounced back and blew their opponents off the pitch.
So what?s next for Hornets?
Somerset Trojans this Friday night in a match to decided Group B winners.
And make no mistake, Boyles is looking forward to having his best players at is disposal.
?We are definitely going to try and win,? he declared. ?A few of our players, including Carlos (Smith) were not available the other night through cards (player registration cards). Some of our players did not have their cards updated and so were forced to sit out the match.
?But we will get stronger and continue building on our performances.?
Trojans? coach Dennis Brown, though, is thinking along the same lines.
?I go to every match with intentions of winning and so we are not going to take anything lightly against Town on Friday,? he told
?We had some serious rivalries with Town over the years, even during the days when I was playing.?
Brown captained Trojans to FA Cup glory over Town in 1990.
Trojans pasted Blazers 6-1 in their opening Martonmere Cup Group B clash and, thanks to Town?s generous 5-2 win over the same opposition, have secured passage to the competition?s semis.
Brown said it doesn?t make any difference who Trojans meet in the semi-finals.
?It isn?t going to be easy for us no matter who we play against anyway,? he added. ?And after winning our first match against Boulevard I have repeatedly stressed to the players that was only one result and that we now have to work even harder to live up to expectations.?
Wolves edged Social Club 4-3 at Bernard Park on Sunday. The match did not end in a scoreless draw as was previously reported.
Peter Sampson (two goals), Rashid Ebbins and Michael Spence all tallied for Wolves.
Also, Jade? Foggo and not Phillip Anderson scored for St.George?s Colts during the East Enders? 2-1 win over Paget.
