Golfers shoot for $1 million

A local golfer could pocket a million dollars at St. George's Golf Club next week - although chances of winning the cash are much more than a million to one.

As part of the annual Re/Max Long Drive contest being held on Government's course at the east end next Saturday (September 28), a draw will be held involving all of the contestants.

Two lucky names out of the hat will then be given a single shot each at making a hole-in-one on one of St. George's' par-three holes. If he or she is successful, the reward will be a million dollars.

Meanwhile, some other attractive prizes are on offer for the big-hitters who will compete between mid-day and 4 p.m. in what is a regional qualifier for the worldwide Re/Max Long Drive competition, sponsored locally by Cable & Wireless.

For an entry of $30, each contestant will be allowed six drives on the par four second hole.

Should the longest drive at the end of the day belong to a local professional, he or she will be awarded an all-expenses paid trip to the Turks and Caicos the following week for the second round of the regional qualifiers.

If an amateur hits the longest drive, he or she will be given $500 towards the same trip.

More details on the event can be obtained from Max Atherden at St. George's GC (297-8067).
