Kirkland on the up at the Laser Worlds

Bermudian Zander Kirkland finished 43rd out of 65 boats in the Silver Fleet at the Laser World Championships yesterday.

The 19-year-old scored 383 points in the 11-race competition which took place at Hyannis Yacht Club in Massachusetts, USA.

The Silver Fleet was won by Eshed Meseritz of Israel with 199 points. Kirkland, who was 47th after racing on Tuesday, was keen to move up in the standings in the final two races.

"On Tuesday, I had one of my best starts; a third of the way from the favoured pin end and tacked soon after to cross most of the fleet.

"I was sixth at the weather mark, eighth in a four-boat procession at the leeward mark, but lost six boats on the second beat as I did not consolidate on boats on the other side of the course.

"College sailing, where all races count, will teach me not to take that sort of risk," said Kirkland.

Robert Scheidt of Brazil leads the Gold Fleet after ten races. The two-time Olympic medallist is followed by Sweden's Karl Suneson and Australia's Brendan Casey.
