Race is a `Breeze' for Lopes' top filly

Ebony 202, the three-year-old filly owned by veteran Bermuda harness driver David Lopes, was victorious again in Indiana last Friday night, this time in the prestigious Indiana Breezers Stakes which represents the pinnacle of the racing calendar in that region.

The filly, who is currently establishing herself as the quickest three-year-old in the state and who was bought by Lopes in April, 2002, won the first heat of a two-heat race, in which the combined finishes determined the overall placing. The pony's winning time was one minute, eight seconds.

And although she finished a narrow second in the second heat - after hitting the starting gate which resulted in a starting penalty and forced her to run on the outside bend - her combined time was easily good enough to lift the title.

Ebony 202 will now rest throughout the winter under the eye of experienced American trainer Willie Borkholder before getting ready for a new summer season of racing early in the new year.

Although Lopes had intended to bring his prized asset back to Bermuda, such has been the filly's success, he now intends to leave Ebony 202 in Borkholder's hands for some time to come.

"I'm very pleased with her and I was so lucky to get her when I did," Lopes said. "As long as 1he continues to do well I will keep her in Indiana because it makes no sense to bring her to Bermuda where the quality of the racing is just not as good."
