Players are being sought to help relaunch the sport of water polo in Bermuda.

The sport has had a strong following on the Island in previous decades but that has since waned.

Now Marc Fullerton is hoping to get the sport up and running again with the formation of the Bermuda Water Polo Association.

Fullerton, who has played the sport while at University in Canada, has been advertising his intentions around Hamilton and has already had a number of people say they are interested in taking part.

"Back when I used to swim I really just wanted to train and not compete," said Fullerton. "I was told that if I didn't want to compete then I was wanted for training.

"Water polo gave me the opportunity to train and play games at the same time. I picked up the game and I wondered why it was not continued here on a more serious level."

Ideally, Fullerton is looking for a minimum of 12 players to start off with and, as and when interest grows, a league will then be created.

"You need strong legs so that you keep yourself afloat," he said, when asked what attributes a would-be player should have. "It's a game where you need to use your intelligence. There are set offences and defences you can run, you can match up against different people. You can use certain skills in certain positions, it's kind of like basketball in that respect.

"You don't have to be ultra-fast but you have to be consistent - you have to be able to go up and down, up and down. It can be very tiring."

Initially, the sport will only be open to those over the age of 16 as availability at BASA pool is restricted to later in the evening, but Fullerton said it could be expanded in the future.

"The only times we can have the pool is between 8.30 p.m. and 10 p.m. at night, which is nice for those who have to work," he said.
