BFA honour Governor

The Governor Sir John Vereker on Monday gratefully accepted the role of honorary president of the Bermuda Football Association, following in the footsteps of previous Governors.

A Bermuda Football Association contingent led by president Larry Mussenden travelled to Government House yesterday afternoon where Sir John was officially bestowed with the title.

"We invited him to be honorary president which is in line with previous Governors fulfilling that role and he was happy to accept it. Both he and Lady Vereker were able to give some fresh ideas on the direction football may take as well as from a fundraising point of view,'' said Mussenden.

"We look forward to their participation in our football programmes and also in the behind the scenes work we know they will do on behalf of football, in that they will be able to come out and represent the BFA in his everyday business as well as coming out and supporting football and our young people in general.''

According to the president, Lady Vereker is keenly interested in football, revealing that she followed all of the World Cup.

"We find that we have a fanatical supporter in her and we look forward to her becoming involved in our programmes," he said. "And she also expressed an interest in the ladies and girls' programmes, so it's very nice to know that the Governor's wife could be actively involved in football."

The president was told that although the Governor had not played soccer as a youngster both he and his wife were supporters of Wimbledon Football Club.
