Bascome ponders coaching offer
David Bascome could be the new head coach of the Harrisburg Heat soccer team in the USA.
The Bermudian midfielder, who starts his joint 11th annual Pro Soccer Clinic with Shaun Goater on Monday at the National Sports Centre, says the proposal has been put to him and he is considering it.
Earlier this year, a frustrated Bascome said he was pondering his future with the indoor team as his championship expectations have failed to materialise in a decade with that club.
"I have been talking with the Harrisburg Heat and it looks like the team will be around. They threw some things at me like me becoming the head coach of the Heat and also being head coach of one of the outdoor teams.
"I haven't made any decision yet. When I get back to Harrisburg I'll make that decision," said Bascome.
Whether he accepts the job or not, the 32-year-old will continue playing for the club and has set his sights on being a professional footballer for another five years.
"I'll definitely still be playing. Right now my motivation is to get back and play. I just had a big surgery on my mcl (medial collateral ligament in his right knee). Full recovery for soccer players takes a few months. It's going well and I'm doing some rehabilitation now, working on my strength," he said.
Bascome, who is currently an assistant coach with the Heat, is looking forward to the week-long camp which he and the Island's other leading football star, Goater, will be conducting.
"We'll be trying to instil discipline in these youngsters, especially regarding their attitude and respect for their environment. It's important players have discipline from early on. We have a lot of talent in Bermuda and we're trying to give them some ways out by developing that talent but they need discipline too," he noted.
Goater said that as always they would be aiming to improve the quality of the camp, particularly the drills.
"We want to make it more beneficial to the kids and more enjoyable for them. We have some exciting things planned for them and we are looking forward to it again," said the Manchester City striker.
