Now it?s our turn to take control, says goalkeeper

Come tomorrow evening the World Cup hopes of an entire country could rest in the trusted gloves of ?keeper Timmy Figureido.

The 31 year-old Somerset Trojans goalie is perhaps on the verge of the most crucial 90 minutes of his international career.

Figureido, a last-minute replacement for Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, performed admirably in Bermuda?s 2-1 defeat to El Salvador in San Salvador last week, a showing which kept the Island?s hopes of advancing through to the next round alive.

Now the veteran ?keeper hopes lessons were learned.

?We only made two mistakes (in San Salvador) and they were able to capitalise on them,? explained Figureido.

?But that happens in games, the ball takes a slight deflection or people get caught out of position ? it?s all part of the game. But hopefully if we can get our act together going forward, then we will have less time to worry about defending. Everybody just wants to play.?

He added: ?Going into the first leg we were blind . . . we didn?t know anything about them. They caused us some concerns coming forward with their running off the ball and they came at us in waves.

?We created a few chances down there and their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves. Obviously I was kept busy but that?s the name of the game . . . it happens like that especially when you?re playing away from home.

?Hopefully this time around I won?t be as busy, but now we know something about them. Now I think we will able to better adjust to the situation and hopefully come out on the right end of the result.?

And in order to achieve their winning objective, Bermuda will have to capitalise on their chances, said Figureido.

?Obviously we have to score a goal and so I think we will come out all guns ablaze. But if we don?t go that way, then we must keep them out. And the longer we keep them out means we still have a chance of slipping one in towards the end,? said Figureido, adding: ?Hopefully we can create a few more chances and they won?t be so lucky this time.?

Asked if the absence of Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne through injury would have an adverse effect on the team, the ?keeper said: ?I have confidence in everyone on this team. This is just another opportunity for someone else to step up and do the job.?

And with rain forecast for Sunday, Figureido reckoned it could be a blessing in disguise.

?It is very slick up there (National Sports Centre),? he noted. ?And so I think we have a couple of things going in our favour. We have an advantage in the fact they (El Salvador) arrive tomorrow (today) and according to FIFA regulations they are only allowed one hour on the pitch before match-day.

?So it might not be enough time for them to adjust to the speed of the pitch and that could play in our favour because if it is raining the pitch is going to be twice as fast ? and we?ve played up there (National Sports Centre) in the rain before and know what the conditions are like.?
