Goater launches fan club
Many people would back Manchester City striker Shaun Goater, but how many would have Shaun Goater on their back?
Well one City fan did and the lengths he went to show his appreciation of the Bermudian have prompted Goater to set up his own fan club.
Now he's not suggesting that others go to the same extremes as the fan pictured with Goater on Page 24 of today's Royal Gazette, but if you've always wanted to show your loyalty to the Island's favourite soccer son you now have the opportunity.
For $10, supporters can become members of the club, sponsored by The Gazette, and will be eligible for:
4 A monthly draw for one of these selected prizes - dinner with Goater, a one-on-one training session with the player, an autographed away shirt, team tracksuit or autographed home shirt.
4 Special arrangements for Manchester City tickets.
4 A regular newsletter.
"The idea itself came from this fan. I didn't realise people were that obsessed about me and what I am doing in my career. This was taking being a fan to the ultimate level. I have had people name their kids after me and so forth, but nothing like this," said Goater, currently back on the Island prior to the start of pre-season training with Premiership City.
"So knowing I have a following in Bermuda I wanted to do something that would really allow me to connect to the fans.
"It is something that allows me to get with them face to face, is more tangible than just seeing me on a TV screen and allows them to become involved.
"When I am back in England it will allow them to keep up to date with what is going on as far as I am concerned and they will be able to read in my own words what is happening and not wonder if what they see in a paper is accurate or not."
