Island sailor Zander Kirkland, in his last event at Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts, led his school to second place in the US High School Team Racing Nationals in Detroit, Michigan.
The two-day event was held in 420 dinghies.
Day one saw winds of 15-18 knots and a huge chop in which Tabor excelled to lead the day with a 10-1 record and advance to the championship round along with schools from California, Louisiana and Massachusetts.
"We really grinded through the big chop when the breeze came on and our speed was good," the team captain said.
Day two saw light winds and Tabor went 3-3, losing the final race by yards and the national Campionship in a tie-breaker to rival Milton Academy of Milton, Massachusetts.
