The more you score . . . the less you win

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) yesterday declared Boulevard Community Club as fourth place finishers in the Cingular Wireless Premier Division.

Now Blazers will collect the $5,000 purse instead of North Village, even though the Reds had scored one goal more than their cross-town rivals.

Both clubs completed the 2004/05 football season with identical goal differences of plus two and were also deadlocked at two goals apiece from head-to-head league meetings.

However, Blazers (1.10) held a slightly superior goal average to that of Village (1.09) and, as such, are now entitled to pocket an extra $1,000 for their efforts.

BFA general secretary David Sabir explained: "These are the current rules of the Bermuda Football Association and they have nothing to do with any other external organisation. Therefore Boulevard move up one place in the tables."

In accordance with existing BFA regulations: "In the event of two or more membership organisations being equal on points for any position in any of the divisional tables at the close of the competition, goal difference shall decide. Should that not break the deadlock then goal average will decide," read a statement forwarded from the BFA to yesterday.

In short, a team's goal average is determined by dividing the amount of goals scored by the amount of goal conceded.

The BFA statement continued: "Should a deadlock still persist ? as was the case with Blazers and Village ? then the team having the highest aggregate of goals from games played between the two teams in the division shall be awarded the higher position."

Blazers defeated Village 2-1 last October while the Reds won the return league fixture 1-0 in January.

When notified yesterday, North Village Community Club president Shervin Dill stated: "I haven't seen any documentation regarding such. But I don't think it's an unfair decision.

"This is not a major issue to be quite honest and I don't have a problem with it. That's just the way the ball bounces as far as that goes and so we will just have to live with it and settle for the $4,000."
