Hockey team off the mark
Bermuda?s Under-21 ladies? hockey team recorded their opening win of the Pan American Junior Championships on the weekend, beating hosts Puerto Rico 3-0.
Bermuda attacked from the start and after six minutes Francesca Cacae just missed from an Erica Frith pass.
Bermuda earned five penalty corners before the break but failed to convert any of them.
However, in the second half great work by Stacey Paynter saw Bermuda awarded a 41st minute penalty stroke which Clemmie Stubbs calmly converted.
In the 53rd minute Cacae netted from a Frith cross and in the 64th minute Frith herself completed Bermuda?s scoring ? the best birthday present coach Kath Davis could have asked for.
On Sunday, the Bermuda team put up a brave defensive performance but still went down 9-0 to the gold medal-bound USA team.
Trailing 5-0 at the half, Bermuda restricted the USA to just four goals in the second half with captain Lakae Dill playing a pivotal role in defence.
Despite the margin of victory, Bermuda fared significantly better than some other sides, with the Dominican Republic going down 21-0 to Argentina in one of a number of lopsided matches in the tournament.
Bermuda take on Uruguay this morning in their final Pool B match in an attempt to move up from fifth out of the six teams and are guaranteed at least two more matches after that to establish their final position in the 12-nation tournament.
