Marshall tops medal round

Blake Marshall took medal honours when he fired a one-over-par round of 72 in the qualifying round of the Bermuda Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean Club yesterday.

Marshall, the Mid Ocean Club champion, will take on Scott Barnett in the championship flight first round today while the tournament's defending champion, Robert Vallis, who opted out of yesterday's round, will go against Stephen Pantry.

Derek Holland returned the second best score yesterday of 73 to set up an opening round match against Dave Braddock.

Fraser Hunt, who fired 74 yesterday, Nicholas Mansell (75) and young Jarryd Dillas, one of three players to shoot 77, are all expected to be among the contenders this week.

Among the women, defending champion Jennifer Spurling is missing from the field, leaving Susan Vallis as the clear favourite.

She carded 79 yesterday, seven shots better than second-placed Susie Elton (86).

Vallis takes on Cindy Hardart in her first round match today while Elton meets Katrin Burnie.
