Rain stops match of the day at Den
A waterlogged pitch forced postponement of yesterday?s eagerly anticipated Premier Division clash between leaders Dandy Town and second-placed Devonshire Cougars at the Den.
Devonshire Recreation Club ground staff declared the pitch unsafe to play early yesterday afternoon and now Bermuda Football Association (BFA) will have to find a new date for the two urban rivals to battle it out.
Hornets presently hold a three-point lead over the big cats in the standings.
Officials from Devonshire Recreation Club could not be reached for comment yesterday. However, BFA referees chairman Gregory Grimes confirmed the pitch had fallen victim to Saturday night?s heavy rains.
?The referee (Lyndon Raynor) had been properly notified within the allowed time period (one hour before kick-off) by the field operators that the pitch was unfit to play. And so the match was called off,? said Grimes.
However, Town technical director Wayne (Jim) Baxter argued that the show could have gone on.
?The game could have still been played,? he stated. ?All that needed to be done to the pitch was to put down a bit of sand down on the side nearest the club. But obviously nothing was done.?
