Town still unwilling to pay penalty for shootout no-show
Dandy Town are now threatening to take further action over the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) ruling to enforce a Friendship Trophy quarter-final penalty shootout with North Village.
Hornets, who made good on a previous threat to boycott the shootout on Tuesday night at Devonshire Recreation Club, had an initial appeal rejected.
But it is now understood Hornets are contemplating lodging another appeal and have refused to bow out of the competition gracefully.
Town players and team officials failed to turn up for the shootout with Village and instead held a practice session at their St.John?s Road facility in preparation for Saturday night?s league fixture against Somerset Trojans under the lights at Somerset Cricket Club.
?Our original appeal against participating in a penalty shootout was rejected ? but nobody from our club was present during the meeting,? stated a Town spokesperson yesterday.
?Nobody from the association have to yet to approach us or even notify us that we are officially in or out of the Friendship Trophy competition.
?But we are considering taking further action but as it presently stands we have yet make a final decision over the matter and it would not be proper for the club to make any additional statements at this moment.?
Town and Village played a 2-2 draw after extra time in the first Friendship quarter-final contest at St.John?s Field on Sunday which saw referee George O?Brien call for a replay instead of ordering penalty kicks.
Bermuda Referee Association (BRA) president Richard Knight later placed the blame for the game?s chaotic ending on the referee who was deemed responsible.
BFA officials will now make a final ruling over whether or not Hornets should be dumped out of the competition or allow Village ? defending Friendship Trophy champions ? to advance to the February 2 semi-final against PHC Zebras during next week?s executive meeting.
Devonshire Cougars defeated Boulevard 2-1 at the Den last Tuesday night to book the first spot in the March 27 final at a venue yet to be determined.
BFA president Larry Mussenden confirmed yesterday that a final decision over the matter will be reached during the association?s next executive meeting.
?We are having an executive meeting on the 19th of January and we will be discussing it and then determine the matter at that meeting,? stated Mussenden.
?The rules are quite clear in this particular competition and I don?t want to comment on the disposition of it because it?s now up to the executive to decide how to address the matter.?
