Cricket stalwart Burgess dies

Tributes continued to pour in yesterday for long-serving St.George's Cricket Club executive and former Bermuda Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) vice-president Clive Burgess, who passed away earlier this week.

Commonly referred to by his colleagues as 'Jack', Burgess was a former president at St.George's where he played for the club's league cricket team in the 1940s.

Though he never made the St.George's' Cup Match side, Burgess did enjoy the distinction after he retired from playing of becoming a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the birthplace of cricket and home of the sport's governing body in the UK.

Burgess also served on the BCBC executive as vice-president under the leadership of legendary local cricketer, the late Alma (Champ) Hunt in the early 1980s.

He is survived by daughter Lynette Harris and grandchildren Mikkel and Nichole.

"I am extremely saddened by the loss of Jack Burgess who was a former vice-president of the BCBC and president of St.George's Cricket Club," said Sports Minister Randy Horton yesterday.

"He was certainly a man who I looked up to and a man who gave me much encouragement as a player and also as an administrator."

Horton said he had fond memories of the manner in which the late St.George's stalwart remained calm whenever difficult situations arose.

"During very difficult situations he was always a very calm man. He really knew how to handle people," added Horton.

"He certainly made his mark on the sports scene in Bermuda. Jack also loved his family and my deepest sympathies go out to them."

Former BCBC executive member, Somerset Cricket Club Cup Match skipper and long-serving umpire Anthony (Sonny) Roberts remembered Burgess as a "very nice chap."

"The only time I really got to know him was during meetings at the BCBC. But I certainly can tell you that he was a very well-liked person and certainly he will be sadly missed," said Roberts.
