Title push is on for Colts says skipper

Inspired by last weekend's hard fought 3-3 draw against Jamaica, Devonshire Colts skipper Shannon Burgess reckons his team now have a point to prove on the domestic front.

And what better opposition to make a statement against than defending champions and current league leaders North Village tomorrow at White Hill Field.

Presently trailing Village by goal-difference at the top of the standings, Colts can make significant inroads towards staking a claim for the coveted title with a win over Scott Morton's men.

Colts and Village played to a scoreless draw at Bernard Park during a muted season opener.

But much has changed since then with Colts embarking on a roller coaster ride.

In November, the orangemen clinched their first Martonmere Cup title in 30 years, but then had their bubble burst when they were ousted from the FA Cup and Friendship Trophy competitions.

They have, however, been consistent in the league and remain ideally poised to offer a serious challenge for supremacy heading down the final stretch.

A cautiously optimistic Burgess is confident his team has what it takes to go the distance.

"We showed what we can do!" exclaimed the Colts' skipper, referring to last week's draw with Jamaica.

"The mentality of my players is: the harder the challenge the better we play."

Burgess, was, however, wary of one sobering factor.

"Unfortunately, though, we are our worst enemy at times," he said

"We now have a challenge against North Village and so we need to play as hard as we did against the Jamaicans come Sunday.

"A lot of players have disappeared since the Martonmere Cup final but we just need to prepare ourselves the same way we prepared for our previous match.

"We are only seven wins away from winning the league so it's up to us.

"But we still have a few good teams to play and so we are just going to go out there and play hard."

A question mark looms over the availability of pivotal Colts defender MacKonnen Hollis and forward Jamel Smith - both injured during the Jamaica contest.

Village coach Morton, meanwhile, sounded a warning earlier this week with the refreshing news that his squad will be at full strength.

Elsewhere, Devonshire Cougars will be ready to pounce and take over top spot should Colts and Village play to another draw.

Cougars are at home to Somerset Eagles who themselves have a point to prove - that they too belong among the big boys!

Cougars edged by Eagles 2-1 during the previous encounter between the two teams at White Hill Field in October.

In other matches, PHC Zebras host Dandy Town at Somerset Cricket Club in what, on paper, appears to be another interesting fixture.

Town were able to get the better of Zebras 3-2 during the first encounter at St.John's Field and tomorrow promises to be yet another exciting contest between the two. Both teams also have an added incentive - maximum points in order to steer clear of the relegation zone.

The contest between the resurgent Boulevard Blazers and Somerset Trojans also has the makings for another epic battle at BAA Field.

Trojans got the better of Blazers 1-0 at Somerset Cricket Club during a controversial encounter in October.

Turning to First Division action, the current referee shortage has forced the cancellation of the matches between Southampton Rangers and Ireland Rangers and Wolves and Prospect.

The contest between St.George's and St.David's will go ahead as originally scheduled, while the match featuring Paget and Young Men's Social Club is also slated to get underway at White Hill Field.
