All I want from Santa this year...
If you are anything like me you’ve managed to check off presents for almost all the women on your list with relative ease. But when it comes to the men in your life — you’re almost waiting in vain for the North Star to guide your way to something special.Believe it or not, most of the men polled by The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle section didn’t seem that hard to please (at least not when it came to Christmas gift giving). Nor did they want boxers with reindeer on them, another set of tools or a festive tie for the holiday season. What they did seem to want were thoughtful gifts from the ones they love.Nikki Bascome, a junior middleweight boxing champion, said it would be great to get some new sporting gear to help him look good in the ring next year.“At the top of my wish list I would say is some new boxing trunks,” Mr Bascome said. “Custom made to fit only me, with my own design and name on them, preferably shiny silver and black.“Why? Because for my next fight I would like to fight in style.”Reggae artist Fiyah Marshall, whose real name is Alex Marshall, must have been a really good boy this year after asking Santa for a few big name items for his holiday wish list.He said: “I would love a new boat to enjoy next year into the summer, a 30 foot centre console would do the job.“Other than that a new Honda CBR600RR [sports motorcycle] to enjoy in the US would be great, seeing that I am moving to LA and I don't want to be stuck in traffic.“But really all I want is to have a great holiday with all my friends and family.”Others like Jamahl Simmons, who’s a regular speaker on radio stations like Hott107.5, said the apple of his eye for the holiday season is a DVD copy of a movie classic. The film enthusiast said he would “literally kill” for a copy of Arthur Rankin's ‘The Ivory Ape’ filmed in Bermuda, to add to his collection.“I have vague memories of watching it as a child during a sleepover at my best friend's house and remember thinking it was the greatest movie I had ever seen,” Mr Simmons said.“That was the first time I was able to see Bermuda as the setting for a movie and to see people I knew in the background as extras.“Last year my wife gave me ‘Bermuda Depths’ also filmed by Mr Rankin in Bermuda and while it certainly isn't the greatest movie ever made, it has a place of pride in my movie collection.”Outside of material possessions, what he said it would also be nice to see the country buckle its purse strings and get on the path to economic recovery.“For the country, I would like to see us pull out of this recession with every Bermudian being able to make a living doing what they love and enabled to reach their full potential,” he added.DJ David Furtado, of YGS Entertainment Bermuda, said there wasn’t much on his Christmas list this year. Two items that would make him smile, if found under the Christmas tree, are an iPhone 5 and a new headset by ‘Beats’ by rapper Dr Dre.“[I’d like] an iPhone5 because I'm tired of my curve blanking out on me and some Beats by Dre would be cool to DJ with,” he said. The pricey headphones, designed for sound engineers and musicians, are used by artists like Will.i.am in the studio.Mr Furtado admitted he wasn’t too materialistic when it came to the holiday. ”As long as my family, friends are happy and healthy I'm good.”Belcario Thomas, the project manager at Four Star, couldn’t think of anything gift-wise he wanted for the holidays — unless perhaps seeing his wife Jennifer wrapped up in a bow was an option. He said: “Here's my thought: after everything else, all men really want is love — compassionate, sincere, warm, nurturing and affectionate love.“Yeah a statuesque body, beautiful face, high intelligence count too, but luckily my wife didn’t have to make me decide on a trait since she has them all.”
