Incinerator is put back into service
Belco will be interrupting power to residents between Tynes Bay and Dock Hill this morning while maintenance works continue.
Crews are working to restore service after the fire at the incinerator which began on Christmas Day.
Service will be stopped for about 50 homes for an hour from around 9 a.m.
Government said the Tynes Bay facility is back to normal after the fire.
The Ministry of Works and Engineering and Housing said the Tynes Bay Waste Facility was not damaged in the weekend fire and the plant is back in operation following shutdowns for maintenance.
Acting Permanent Secretary Gerry Ming said the pile of garbage that ignited was generated when one of the existing streams of the plant was taken down for routine maintenance in mid-November.
A second stream was taken down to accommodate system upgrades and repair work on the boilers and furnace. This caused 50 to 60 tons of garbage to accumulate daily.
He said at no time was the plant in danger of being damaged in the fire.
Contractors have cleared the site and removed debris to the Marsh Folly waste facility.
The plant is fully operational and normal garbage collection and disposal has resumed although the Works and Engineering Ministry said no more bulk wood waste will be accepted at the plant until further notice although residents can still take domestic waste.
The blaze is still being investigated by the Fire Department and arson has not been ruled out.
