Commission to be named today
Premier Alex Scott is expected to announce the members of the Bermuda Independence Commission (BIC) today.
Though the Opposition United Bermuda Party was asked to give input on the choosing of members of the BIC, party spokesperson Jamahl Simmons declined to confirm last night if they had done so or not.
Instead, he said the UBP will be making an announcement today as well.
The BIC is being set up as an independent body publicly exploring the question of sovereignty for Bermuda. The 13-person team, picked to be representative of the community, will begin work in January and have up to six months to hold public meetings and take submissions.
A report will then be sent to Cabinet for Government to develop its approach.
It was promised that the BIC will comprise representatives from unions and organisations as well as individuals. ?Government will set them up and then leave them alone,? Mr. Scott has previously stated.
