Bermuda?s firearms amnesty has all but fallen flat going into its final week.

The third week of the 28-day amnesty, brought in by Government after outbreaks of gang-related lawlessness, yielded just 21 empty ammunition casings. More than 25 items have been surrendered since the amnesty?s inception last month, although only one working firearm has been handed in. The most interesting weapon to find its way into Police hands was an empty rocket launcher casing, picked up two weeks ago following an anonymous tip-off.

?The Bermuda Police Service would like to remind the public that this is the last week of the amnesty,? said a Police spokesman yesterday.

?We are encouraging anyone who has a firearm or prohibited weapon in their possession to hand it in to any Police station before 7 p.m. on Saturday.

?After that date, the usual penalties for possessing a firearm and/or a prohibited weapon will be in effect. This is your last chance to turn in any firearm or prohibited weapon without fear of prosecution.?
