Both Police and Works and Engineering staff were on hand at Dockyard yesterday to help traffic cope with a new road access system implemented Monday, Minister Alex Scott said.

The Ministry reached an agreement with bus drivers on Friday ending an eight-week bus boycott of service to the West End which left commuters frustrated.

The drivers had complained that the access roads to Dockyard were dangerously narrow and Government was forced to add a private minibus system to the area until the dispute was settled.

Under the new agreement, all traffic entering Dockyard will now travel along Pender Road while traffic exiting the former Royal Naval base will travel along Freeport Drive.

Works and Engineering have erected signs to inform motorists of the new route but Monday, vehicles were spotted entering and leaving the area along Pender Road.

"Old habits die hard," Mr. Scott said yesterday. "Even with the signs up, without Police of Works and Engineering staff there some people were still going back out on Pender Road."

He said both Ministry staff and Police would remain in the area to direct traffic this week until motorists become more accustomed to the new route.

"The buses are running and folks seem to be satisfied with the route," the Minister added.

"It is going to be paved and brought up to code but people are using it."
