French film star Gerard Depardeau is reported to have been on a private jet which was forced to make an emergency landing at Bermuda International Airport on Tuesday.

Several airport sources told The Royal Gazette the actor, who is renowned for his large nose, was aboard the Lear Jet which returned to the airport at lunchtime after the pilot spotted smoke in the cockpit.

The jet, which had four passengers and two crew, was on its way to Montreal, Quebec, when the pilot spotted the problems.

The plane managed to land safely without damage and neither the crew nor passengers suffered any injuries.

Depardeau has gained international acclaim for his comedic and serious roles in films such as Cyrano de Bergerac, Green Card, Napoleon, Man in the Iron Mask, and Too Beautiful for You.

It is not known how long he was in Bermuda or the purpose of his visit.
