Throne Speech given today

Pomp and ceremony will rule on the grounds of the Cabinet Office this morning as Governor Sir John Vereker spells out Government?s agenda for the new parliamentary year in the Throne Speech.

The Speech, which is written by the Government but delivered by the Governor, is expected to flesh out the long-awaited Social Agenda, which Premier Alex Scott and other Ministers have been promoting since the early summer.

Mr. Scott has said the Agenda, which could last for ten years, would ensure ?the Haves continue to have, but the Have Nots will have more?.

Critics of the Government have warned the Social Agenda is little more than rhetoric, and say that Government has failed to move on social issues for more than six years.

In addition, the Speech is expected to lay out more details of how the Government intends to promote the debate on Independence which Mr. Scott called for in April.

Sir John and Lady Vereker will arrive at the Cabinet office by landau to begin the ceremony proper at around 10.45 a.m.

He will accept a royal salute and then order the presence of the Island?s legislators.

will be read out on the Cabinet lawn to hundreds of dignitaries and invited guests as well as members of the public.

Premier Alex Scott, and members of Cabinet will be explaining the details of the social agenda at a press conference shortly after noon.
