Police are investigating a possible arson at a Hamilton house.

Firefighters were called to a premises in Band Room Lane at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday and arrived to see the owner trying to fight the blaze with a garden hose.

One room of the house suffered substantial damage to the floor, ceiling and light fittings with light smoke damage caused to other rooms.

A Fire Department spokesman said that "something untoward seemed to have taken place and arson cannot be ruled out".

Police were then alerted due to the suspicious circumstances.
