St. George's Swing Bridge will be closed for repairs after November 1, when the last cruise ship leaves the Old Towne, the Works and Engineering Ministry announced yesterday.

The Bridge will be tested in mid February and be back in full operation by March 2003. Resurfacing work will begin in early December and motorists are being asked to be patient during this period as only one lane at a time will be open.

King Edward VII Memorial Hospital chief executive officer Stephanie Reid has said there is no evidence of disruption - despite the threat of an overtime ban.

Bermuda Public Services Union bosses said this week workers might refuse overtime in protest about a recent disappointing pay award.

But Mrs. Reid told The Royal Gazette last night: “Nothing has come to my attention.”

A thief could well change his ways if he takes some time to read a book that he stole from a Pembroke home on Wednesday.

The female resident told Police that a Bible in a leather case, a hand fan, a note book and a substantial amount of jewellery were missing from her house. She said she had locked the property before going to work but on returning at 5.10 p.m., realised that it had been broken into.
