An official remembrance service will take place next month to acknowledge the post-Fabian clean up.

Government yesterday announced the expected event, to be held at the National Sport's Centre in Devonshire on Sunday, November 2, would also be preceded by a National Clean-up Day on the Saturday.

Minister of Community Affairs and Sport Dale Butler said the service is being held to allow the community to come together to give thanks and to acknowledge and commend the people of Bermuda for their hard work in helping to restore the Island.

Hurricane Fabian swept through the Island on September 5, causing millions of dollars in damage, closing roads, ripping roofs of houses and killing four.

Despite the devastation, normality returned to many with surprising speed with the airport open within three days and all homes having electricity restored within three weeks.

"Everyone in Bermuda needs to pat themselves on the back." said the Minister.

"Through all the personal, property and Island devastation, the way in which the community rallied to together to get Bermuda Inc. Back in business with random acts of kindness and hard work is truly appreciated.

"We all did the best we could at a time when our best did not always seem like it was good enough. But I am tremendously proud of the the community and I'd like to harness the spirit of what we all witnessed post-Fabian."

The service will take place at 3 p.m. with various faiths represented. The Bermuda Regiment Band will be playing and various dignitaries, key members of the business community and the service organisations are expected to attend.
