Causeway uncertainty

Work on the Causeway - the only road linking the East End with the rest of the Island - remains on target to be completed by the end of the week, weather permitting.

But Permanent Secretary of Works and Engineering Derrick Binns was unable to tell The Royal Gazette last night when night time curfews would be lifted.

Ministry staff, who have been working around the clock on the bridge for over a month, were hoping that the Causeway could be open for two-lane traffic by the middle of the week.

Traffic being able to use only one lane at a time has caused congestion to build on either side because of the stop-go system.

"We are hoping to have some of the restrictions lifted by mid-week," he said.

"But I haven't been able to get an update, so all I can say at the moment is that it will be mid-week."
