Bermuda Electric Light Company (Belco) workers travelled to the Bahamas to help repair main lines damaged by Hurricane Frances.

Belco spokeswoman Linda Smith told The Royal Gazette yesterday that six workers left Bermuda on September 9 and returned on September 18 after eight days.

The Bermuda crew worked mainly on Abaco Island, Bahamas, said Ms Smith.

Frances hit the Bahamas on September 5 and left at least two people dead and one missing. Winds and rain beat the island for 48 hours, damaging homes and causing severe flooding.

The second storm to hit the Bahamas in under a month, Hurricane Jeanne, blasted through Abaco Island days after Belco workers returned to Bermuda.

Ms Smith said Belco had not received a definitive request for more workers in the Caribbean.

She believed Belco would hear this week or next if another crew was needed in one of the many Caribbean Islands mauled by the alarming number of hurricanes this season.

The Caribbean Association of Electric Utilities (CARILEC) sent crews of Caribbean workers to Bermuda when Hurricane Fabian hit, Ms Smith said.

She added that CARILEC had already assembled crews to help in Jamaica but Bermuda was not included.

However, she believed Belco workers may be called to the Cayman Islands or Jamaica in the next two weeks.
