Charities launch campaign to 'Buy Back Bermuda'
In a move to protect rural space from future development, the Bermuda National Trust and the Bermuda Audubon Society have launched a public campaign to buy about three acres of land at Long Bay, Sandys.
The seller of the land wishes to remain anonymous, Audobon Society president Andrew Dobson said.
The land, located between the Audubon Nature Reserve and Long Bay National Park, will cost $1.7 million, of which $300,000 will be provided by the two charities.
"The beachfront property of 2.86 acres, when combined with the adjacent Audubon Nature Reserve and Long Bay National Park, will form an extended protected area along the full length of the Long Bay shoreline, creating a total of almost ten acres," a statement said.
"The beach, woodland and pond will provide a haven for residents and tourists alike, as well as local and migratory birds."
Mr. Dobson described the land as an "ideal nature reserve".
National Trust director Steven Conway explained that the plan was to purchase the land over the next 18 months and that a public campaign for funds, "Buy Back Bermuda", will begin shortly.
"We are hoping that people and organisations concerned about the future of Bermuda and the Island's quality of life will make a generous donation to this Long Bay, Sandys appeal," he said.
